- Howard Awrey beloved Husband and a pioneer of Aspen since 1948 passed away in Carbondale, CO on March 22, 2014. He was born in Hamilton Ontario, Canada and moved to Aspen in 1948. He played professional football and Hockey in Canada and was a foreman at the steel mill before moving to Aspen when he then leased the Sundeck and opened the Skiers Chalet Steak House and later the lodge along with his then wife Jean Awrey. He was a passionate skier and tennis player, Skied almost every day of his life and made huge contributions to the Aspen Valley Ski Club.
He also loved Big Band Swing music and was a part of putting together the first rope tow, picking up skiers on the backside of Aspen Mtn in his Willy?s Jeep. Howard and his bright steel blue eyes will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Diana O?Callaghan Awrey who has been by his side for 33 yrs, Nephew Nick Awrey and local extended family Dan & Christine O?Callaghan, their children Joseph, Luke, Mikayla, Michael, Katelyn, John and Grace along with numerous family throughout Colorado.
There will be a mass at St Mary?s Catholic church Saturday, March 29th at 12:00 noon, reception to follow at the Elks Lodge from 1:30 - 3:30 generously catered by Cunundrum Catering. Howard you will be our hero forever! In lieu of flowers please send any donations to AVSSC to help continue Howard?s legacy of supporting our young athletes.
